Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary: What to See and Do

Koalas, kangaroos and a rare platypus encounter

What to see at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary โ€” the animals, the feedings, the bird show, the platypus encounter โ€” plus when to go, how long to spend, and the beach right next door.

The Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is 200 hectares of rainforest and grassland on the Currumbin coast, and it's the closest you'll get to the animals on the Gold Coast โ€” and by "close" we mean "they'll be in your hand within twenty minutes of the gate." It's also a rescue and conservation facility as well as a tourist attraction: most of the animals you'll meet were either rescued or are there to protect a species. That matters when you're holding a koala. You're holding an animal that couldn't be put back in the wild.

The Animals

What You'll Meet

Koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, emus, echidnas and the platypus, plus a bird population that runs to over 100 species โ€” kookaburras, rosellas, king parrots, sulphur-crested cockatoos, and everything in between. The rainforest walking track takes you past the emus and the bird aviary; the grassland paddocks are where the kangaroos and wallabies are; and the enclosed enclosures โ€” including the one you're holding a koala in โ€” are where the rescued animals live. It's 200 hectares, and it's laid out so you can see everything on a gentle walk without doing a single steep step.

The Feedings

Book These Ahead

Book Ahead

The Koala Feeding

You hold a koala. For a photo, yes, but mostly for the moment โ€” because koalas aren't sleepy, they aren't slow, they're warm, and they have opinions. The feeding is at set times, usually mid-morning and mid-afternoon, and it fills up fast on weekends. Book the morning one: the light is better and the koala is more awake.

Book Ahead

The Kangaroo Feeding

You hand-feed from a bucket, and the kangaroos have their own ideas about who's getting the next piece. It's the one activity kids of all ages watch properly โ€” they don't just watch, they help, and they get the pieces. It's at set times, usually an hour or two after the koala feeding, so plan the walk around both.

The Bird Show

The 45-Minute Performance

The bird show is the 45-minute performance of the day: 50-plus birds in a free-flight show, from parrots to raptors, and it's the one activity that ends with a round of applause from people who came for the kangaroos. It's at a set time โ€” usually mid-morning and again in the afternoon โ€” so plan your walk around it rather than the other way. The 100-species aviary next door is the quiet version: the same birds, without the show, and a lot closer to the ones you'd see in the rainforest.

The Platypus

Rare Anywhere in the World

The platypus encounter is rare anywhere in the world โ€” the platypus is a difficult animal to keep, and most zoos don't have one. This is one of the handful of places on the planet where you can see one up close. The encounter is short โ€” the animal is active for a window, and the feeding is the one to book, because that's when it's up and about. It's a short encounter, an up-close one, and it's the photo that makes the trip: a duck-billed, beaked, web-footed animal that looks like someone's very good idea of a mammal, looking at you like it's figured you out.

Timing & Duration

Morning, and 3โ€“4 Hours Minimum

Go in the morning. The animals are most active in the first two to three hours after the gate opens โ€” the koalas are on their branches, the kangaroos are out in the paddock, and the birds are at their loudest. By mid-afternoon the heat has most of them lying down, and the set-time feedings are the ones that fill up. And allow 3โ€“4 hours minimum: a 2-hour visit means rushing from one encounter to the next and missing the quiet parts โ€” and the quiet parts are the point. The 4-hour version: the rainforest walk first, the koala feeding around 10, the bird show at 11:30, lunch in the village, the platypus in the early afternoon.

The Beach Next Door

The Best Day Plan in Currumbin

The sanctuary is on the beach โ€” literally, the gate is a five-minute walk from the sand. That's the best day plan in Currumbin: the sanctuary in the morning (when the animals are active), Currumbin Beach in the afternoon (when the water is calm and the sun is high), and a gelato in the village between the two. The beach is calm in the afternoon and the water is warm โ€” the perfect counterweight to four hours of walking in the rainforest.

Practical

A Small Town

One last thing: Currumbin is a small town. The village is a five-minute walk from the entrance (or a short drive to the bigger town centre) and it's where the gelato, the coffee and the fish-and-chips are. Bring sunscreen, a hat, closed-toe shoes for the walking tracks, and water โ€” there's a cafรฉ on the way out, but the tracks don't have it. Don't plan on a big evening out; plan on a good dinner in the village, and the drive back to the coast in the dark, which is its own reward.
