The Gold Coast in 3 Days: The Perfect Itinerary

70km of coast, 72 hours, one honest plan

Surfers Paradise, Tallebudgera and Kirra, then Springbrook or Byron โ€” a 3-day itinerary that's honest about what you'll miss, what to pack, where to stay, and what to skip.

Three days on the Gold Coast is 72 hours, and it's not enough. That's not a negative โ€” it's the plan. Seventy kilometres of coast, eight different areas and a hinterland of rainforest and waterfalls don't fit in 72 hours, and trying to make them fit is how you end up with a day of driving and a tank of regret. The honest plan is this: three days, three areas, one day trip, and the acceptance that you'll miss things. You will. That's the point โ€” it means you'll come back. Bring this list, skip the planning apps, and let the coast do the rest.

Day One

Surfers Paradise

Arrive, check in, and walk Cavill Avenue โ€” 3km of sand, palms and the skyline. It's the postcard, and it's worth two hours, not two days. If you land at the airport in the morning, the transfer to Surfers is twenty minutes; if you land at night, the skyline over the water is the first thing you'll see, and it's worth the wait. Walk the beach (3km, the whole of it), have a coffee on the esplanade, and wait for the sun to come up over the towers. The SkyPoint observation deck at 5pm: the 77th floor, a 360ยฐ view, and the sky doing its thing 30 minutes before sunset. Dinner on the strip โ€” the strip is the strip: 200m of restaurants, from fish-and-chips to fine dining, and the one to pick is the one that's not a tourist trap. One rule for day one: don't sleep in. The beach is five minutes away, and tomorrow is the real day.

Day Two

Tallebudgera & Kirra, Then Burleigh

This is the day. Morning: a reef snorkel or a surf lesson at Tallebudgera โ€” two hours, book ahead, and the mid-morning window is the cleanest water of the day. Midday: the cove โ€” a short walk from the beach, a rock pool, and a swim in the inner reef. Afternoon: the 20-minute walk along the beach to Burleigh โ€” 2km of sand, palms, and a main street that's 200 years old. Coffee in Burleigh (the one on James Street; the queue around the corner is worth it), and dinner in Burleigh (the main street is where the food is). This is the day that makes the trip: the reef in the morning, the beach in the afternoon, and a main street that's old enough to be worth it.

Day Three

Springbrook or Byron โ€” Pick One

Springbrook: an hour up the mountain, the Nature Playground, two or three waterfalls (Twin Falls and Curtain Falls are the pair to do), and a rainforest walk in the afternoon. Byron: 90 minutes up the coast, the Cape Byron Lighthouse, Main Beach, and the sunset on the rocks. The rule: if you're with kids, Springbrook โ€” the waterfalls are shorter and the drive is shorter. If you're solo, Byron โ€” the lighthouse and the sunset are the reward. Either way, be back on the coast by 4pm: the sunset on the motorway is the end of the day, and it's worth the 20 minutes of light. Don't do both. If you're torn, ask yourself what you'd regret skipping โ€” the waterfalls or the lighthouse โ€” and the answer is your day. You'll regret the one you didn't, and that's the point โ€” it means you'll come back for it.

Pack & Stay

What to Pack, Where to Stay

Pack

The Four Things

Hiking shoes (for the mountain day), a rashie or wetsuit (for the reef), a hat and sunscreen (for the coast), and a light jacket (for the mountain โ€” it's 10ยฐ cooler up there). Leave the flip-flops for the beach; the tracks will have you cursing them by step thirty.

Stay

Match the Area to the Vibe

Action: Surfers Paradise โ€” the skyline, the strip, the beach five minutes away. Quiet: Tallebudgera or Kirra โ€” the reef, the cove, and the 20-minute walk to Burleigh. Family: Southport โ€” the marina, the esplanade, and the Pacific Fair. The rule: pick the area that matches the day you want most, and the others will be a 20-minute drive away rather than a 90-minute detour.

What to Skip

The Honest List

Skip the tourist traps on Cavill โ€” the gelato at three times the price, the "authentic" ice cream that isn't. Skip the overpriced beachfront restaurants โ€” the view is five times the price, and the fish is two times. Skip the bus tours โ€” the coast is 70km; you'll see more in a two-hour drive than in a four-hour tour. The honest version: the best things on the coast are free (the beach, the reef, the walk) or cheap (the coffee, the gelato, the market). The three days are 72 hours of the free and the cheap, and the expensive stuff is what you'll come back for.

"Three days is tight. You'll miss things. That's the point โ€” it means you'll come back."
