Byron Bay is 67km up the coast, and it's the best day trip on the Gold Coast โ if you accept one rule up front: it's 90 minutes each way. Plan the day around the drive, not the other way around, and it's one of the best days of the year. Ignore the rule and it's a long, hot, expensive day that ends with a long, hot drive home. Here's the honest version.
The Drive
67km, Allow Two Hours
From Surfers Paradise to the main street of Byron Bay: 67km, 1 hour 15 minutes in good traffic. Allow two hours to be safe โ especially on a Saturday morning, when the coast road is full of people doing exactly what you're doing. Leave by 8:00 if you want the lighthouse in the morning and you'll be there by 10:00. The drive itself is a good one: the coast road, the rainforest, and a final stretch of mountain that makes the last 15 minutes feel like a reward. And leave by 4pm on the way back โ the sunset on the motorway is gorgeous, but the traffic can be heavy, and a 5pm departure becomes a 7pm arrival in a hot car.
What to See
Three Things, in Order
Cape Byron Lighthouse
The easternmost mainland point in Australia โ the first place on the mainland to see the sun come up. It's a 30-minute walk up from the carpark (steep, but short), and the 30m tower gives you a 360ยฐ view of the whole point. It's the one thing to do first, and the reason to leave at 8:00. Do it in the morning: the light is clean, the carpark is half empty, and the walk is cool.
Main Beach
The main beach is 2km of sand, and it's where the surfers are. The water is clean, the break is good, and the beach is long enough that you can find a quiet corner even on a Saturday. It's where you walk after the lighthouse โ down the hill, along the esplanade, and onto the sand. Tamarama, the small cove at the south end, is the friendlier of the two breaks: a small, manageable wave, and the one for a first time.
The Main Street
The main street is where the coffee is, the market is, and the shops are. It's long, it's busy, and it's where the day slows down. Walk it once in the morning (for the market, if it's a weekend) and once in the afternoon (for the food). It's a 15-minute walk end to end, and the 15 minutes are exactly the right amount of time to decide what you're having for lunch.
What to Do
The Full List
Surfing
Main Beach and Tamarama are the two breaks. Main Beach is a long, clean right; Tamarama is a small, friendly cove that's the one for a first wave. If you're new, book a lesson on Tamarama โ it's the gentlest water in Byron, and a two-hour lesson is usually all you need for your first standing wave.
The Market (Weekends)
The Byron Bay Market is on Saturday and Sunday โ the Saturday one is the big one: 200-plus stalls, food, clothes, art and a live stage, running from 8am to 4pm. It's the one thing to build the day around if you're there on a weekend. On a weekday, the market is gone and the main street is 30% quieter, which is its own reward.
The Lighthouse Walk
A 30-minute walk up, a 360ยฐ view at the top, and a 15-minute walk down. Do it in the morning, when the light is clean and the carpark is half empty. The view at the top is 360ยฐ in the truest sense โ you can see the whole point, both oceans, and the main beach 2km below, and it's the one photo that shows what "easternmost" actually means.
The Beach Walk to Wategos
From Main Beach to Wategos is a 2km walk along the sand, through the rainforest, past the rocks. It's a 30-minute walk, and it's the one that shows you what Byron actually is โ not the main street, but the coast. The rocks at the end, the water between them, and the light on the sand are the three things that make the walk worth doing, and the 30 minutes is exactly the right amount of time to be on the sand before the heat gets to you.
The Best on the Coast
The food scene is genuinely good: the produce comes from the farms 20 minutes up the mountain, and the restaurants show it. Lunch on the main street (a fish and chips, a banh mi, or a bowl โ all of them good), and dinner in one of the town's 30-plus restaurants (the one to book ahead). The coffee is the best on the coast, and the gelato is a category of its own. The honest version: the food is 20% more expensive than the Gold Coast, and it's worth 20% more than the Gold Coast. The produce is the reason, and the farms are the proof.
The vibe, briefly: laid-back, boho, expensive. That's the honest version. The main street is a 15-minute walk, the prices are a notch up, and the vibe is the one that makes you stay longer than you planned. It's a good day, but it's a day of walking and eating, not a day of sleeping in. Allow for it: the walk to the lighthouse, the walk to Wategos, the walk along the main street, and the 90-minute drive each way. The day is long, and it's the long kind that's worth it.
The Day, in Order
When to Be Where
Morning for the lighthouse: the light is clean, the carpark is empty, and the walk is cool โ 9:30 at the top, the 360ยฐ view, and the 15-minute walk down before the heat. Afternoon for the beach: the water is calm, the sun is high, and the market is over โ 1:00 lunch on the main street, the walk to Wategos at 3:00, and the sand until the light changes. Evening for the sunset: the sun sets over the ocean, and the sky does its thing on the rocks โ 6:15 in summer, 4:45 in winter, on Main Beach or the point. Then leave by 4pm โ the sunset on the motorway is gorgeous, but the traffic can be heavy, and a 5pm departure becomes a 7pm arrival in a hot car. The sky will still be doing something on the highway: the lights of the coast coming on in the distance, and a full tank of stories.
