7 Days on the Gold Coast: The Perfect Itinerary

A day-by-day plan: beach, wildlife, rainforest, theme park, boat, market and night — in an order that works

A 7-day Gold Coast itinerary: day-by-day mornings, afternoons and evenings, where to eat, where to stay, and a mix of beach, wildlife, rainforest, theme park, boat days and nights out.

Seven days is the right length for this coast: long enough to see the towers, the rainforest, the reef, a theme park and a proper night out — without doing anything twice. Here's the plan in an order that works, with where to eat and where to stay for each day.

How the Week Is Built

Days 1–2 are the coast proper (Surfers, then Burleigh). Day 3 is wildlife and the reef. Day 4 is the theme-park and big-mall day. Day 5 is the hinterland — the hanging bridges and a lookout. Day 6 is a full day on the water. Day 7 is a slow finish: a boardwalk, a market, a long lunch, one last night. The logic is geography (work north then south) and energy (the loud days early, the quiet days last). You can swap days 4 and 5 if the weather is dodgy — the park day wants sun, the rainforest day wants clouds.

Day 1: Surfers Paradise

Morning: SkyPoint observation deck at first light — the 77th floor over the whole coastline, before the queues. Or sleep in: the view from a good-floor tower is most of the same. Afternoon: a swim at the main beach, walk Cavill Mall, watch the break from the boardwalk. Evening: White Rhino — the big bar, live entertainment, a long menu. Eat: a beachfront café for lunch; the White Rhino menu at night. Stay: a tower on or a few blocks off Cavill — pick a floor with a view, it's worth it.

Day 2: Burleigh Heads

Morning: Burleigh Farmers Market if it's a Saturday (7am–12noon, free), otherwise coffee and breakfast on James Street. Afternoon: the Burleigh Heads National Park headland tracks — short, steep, 360° views; come down to the beach and walk the long flat boardwalk. Evening: dinner at Rosella's — Australiana plates, natural wine, open late. Eat: a James Street café for lunch; Rosella's at night. Stay: an apartment in Burleigh or Mermaid Beach — the local end of the coast, quiet after 9pm.

Day 3: Wildlife & Tallebudgera

Morning: Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary — 27 hectares, 1,000-plus animals, the daily lorikeet feed; open 9am–4pm (adults about $70). Afternoon: over to Tallebudgera Creek National Park — a short walk in the park, then snorkel the reef from the sand (the water's calmer and clearer than any of the Pacific beaches). Evening: BMD Northcliffe — a beachfront surf-club bistro, a big deck, sunset over the water. Stay: an apartment in Tallebudgera or Palm Beach — you're 10 minutes from Burleigh either way.

Day 4: Theme Park & Broadbeach

Morning: Dreamworld (thrills plus wildlife) or SEA World (aquarium, calmer, better with little kids) — pick one, both take a full day. Afternoon: Pacific Fair for the big-mall fix: 400-plus stores, fountains, and the free tourist shuttle if you're not driving. Evening: The Star Gold Coast — the integrated resort: a show, a big buffet, the casino if that's your thing, clubs that run late. Stay: a tower in Broadbeach or Surfers — you're close to both parks and the light rail.

Day 5: Springbrook Hinterland

Morning: Springbrook National Park — the seven hanging bridges (one-way, 2.5km), then Grummit Falls, a 50-metre drop into a gorge. Book the bridge walk in advance in school holidays. Afternoon: Arthur's Seat — 134 steps up, 765 metres of plateau, the best view of the whole coast and hinterland in one look. Evening: back to the coast for dinner at Salt Cafe Bar — a low-key café bar on the Broadwater. Stay: a hotel in Southport or Mermaid Beach. Eat: a park café or a packed lunch on the day — the options in the park are limited.

Day 6: On the Water

Morning: a 3-hour private sail with Sun Sailing out of Main Beach (from about $990 for up to ten people, crew, drinks and a glass of fizz included) — or the See Moreton day tour if you want a proper island day: wrecks to snorkel, lunch, beach time. Afternoon: Main Beach sunset — flat water, the sun going over the water, a café on the boardwalk. Evening: the Sunday roast at Finn McCool's — the Gold Coast's best-pub meal, live music, a full pint. Stay: an apartment in Coolangatta or Mermaid Beach.

Day 7: Slow Morning, Long Lunch

Morning: one last long boardwalk walk — Burleigh to the lighthouse, or Mermaid to the headland. Midday: Ferry Rd Market in Southport (open daily 8am–6pm) — a proper market: European deli, artisan bread, oysters shucked on site, fresh sushi, coffee. Afternoon: a walk along the Southport marina, a coffee at one of the wharf bars. Evening: cocktails at The Exhibitionist — a long wooden bar on the beach at Mermaid Beach, the coast's best sunset drink. Stay: check out — or one last night in Southport if the flight is late.

Where to Stay (The Whole Week)

The simple version: base yourself in Surfers Paradise for days 1 and 4 (towers, energy, light rail to everything), Burleigh/Mermaid for days 2 and 7 (the local end, quiet, James Street), Tallebudgera/Palm Beach for day 3 (the quiet cove, ten minutes from the action), and Southport for day 5 (waterfront, a city feel without the volume). If you'd rather not move bags: one base in Mermaid Beach covers days 1, 2, 5 and 7 with a 15–30 minute drive either way — the week still works, you just drive more.

Final Tips

Book the Springbrook National Park bridge walk and the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary entry ahead in school holidays — both sell out. The boat days (day 6) are worth booking a week or two ahead in summer. The G:link light rail runs the whole coast (Tweed to Varsity) — use it for the theme-park days and it's cheaper than parking. Water is swimmable every day of the week: 23–26°C in summer, 19–21°C in winter. And on day 7, don't skip the long lunch — the week is over, the coast isn't.
