Southport: The Waterfront City

The marina, the long family beach and the city end of the coast

A marina full of yachts, a long family-friendly beach and the city energy without the volume. This is where the coast becomes a town.

Southport is the Gold Coast's waterfront city: a marina full of yachts, a long family-friendly beach, a big casino, and the city energy without the volume. It's where the coast becomes a town.

Local takeThe local way to do Southport: coffee at the pier in the morning, swim the long beach, lunch on the esplanade, and a sunset cruise through the marina. That's the whole day — and it's all within a short walk.

The Marina

Southport Marina is the draw: a working marina full of yachts and boats, sitting on calm Broadwater water. Charter a boat, take a sunset cruise through the marina, or just walk the docks and watch the boats come in. The water is calm — no surf, no swell — so it's the easy version of a day on the water, and the sunset cruise is the classic Southport evening.

The Foreshore and the Beach

The foreshore runs the full length of the beach: a long, flat walk, patrolled and family-friendly, wide enough that even on a busy weekend you can find your own corner. The beach is long and family-friendly — gentle water, flags, and a long easy walk. It's the “full family day” beach: swim, lunch on the esplanade, a long walk, repeat.

The Southport Pier

The Southport Pier is a working fishing pier: first light and sunset are the money times, when the light is low, the water is flat, and the view over the marina is at its best. It's the quiet, free version of the same moment as the sunset cruise.

The Waterfront Dining Strip

The waterfront dining strip runs along the esplanade, facing the marina: a long row of restaurants, and dinner with the boats. Pick a table facing the water on a clear evening and stay for the sunset. It's the classic Southport evening — no light shows, no queues, just water and light.

Pacific Fair (Quick Clarification)

One clarification, because people get this wrong: the big mall — Pacific Fair — is technically in Broadbeach, right on the border. If you're staying in Southport it's a short walk or a 5–10 minute drive: hundreds of shops, a cinema, a food court, and (when running) an indoor ice rink (check current seasons). It's the “one-stop” option when you want shopping, a movie and a feed all in one go.

The Star

The Star is the waterfront casino: tables, pokies, a big floor, and a view over the marina. It's the “night out” option — and the free shows are a proper spectacle, worth watching even if you don't gamble.

Family Attractions

Southport is a family heart: an aquarium (SEA World) a short drive over in Surfers, the big theme parks 10–15 minutes north, plus the marina, the beach and the esplanade. If you're staying with kids, it's the easy base: one stop covers water, beach and a very long flat walk.

Why It Feels Calmer Than Surfers

Southport is the city end of the coast, but it doesn't sound like it. The volume here is the marina, the water and the esplanade — not the strip. It's the “city feel without the volume”, and it's why locals call it the quiet city end: you get the city energy, the dining and the big floor, without the queue at the traffic light.

Where to Stay

Southport is an apartment and hotel town: high-rise apartments and hotels run along the esplanade and the streets just behind. Pick a floor with a view over the marina — it's worth it — and you'll wake up to boats instead of traffic.

Getting Around

Surfers Paradise is a 10-minute drive; Burleigh Heads is 15 minutes; Broadbeach (and Pacific Fair) is 5 minutes. Southport is the city end; the rest of the coast is a short drive away. If you want a marina, a long family beach and a city feel, start here.
