Gold Coast Shopping: Where to Buy

Eight places, eight different sizes: two big malls, a pedestrian mall, a CBD, a value centre, two markets and a boutique

Gold Coast shopping: eight options by type — Pacific Fair, Stocklands, Cavill Mall, Southport Central, Robina Town Centre (value), Ferry Rd Market, Burleigh Farmers Market and a James Street boutique, with what each one is actually for.

The coast's shopping runs from a 420-store mall to a 40-store boutique on a heritage main street — and the “where do I buy” question is really a “how much do I want to browse” question. These are the eight places, in size order, with what each one is actually for.

A Quick Map

The shape of it: two big malls (Pacific Fair in Broadbeach, Robina Town Centre in Robina), a department store (Stocklands in Burleigh), a pedestrian mall (Cavill Mall in Surfers), a CBD (Southport Central in Southport), two markets (Ferry Rd Market daily in Southport, Burleigh Farmers Market Saturday in Burleigh) and a boutique (Kivari on James Street). The free Pacific Fair free shuttle shuttle runs from Broadbeach; the G:link light rail stops at Pacific Fair (Broadbeach South). Everything is within 15 minutes of a hotel on the coast. Pacific Fair

Pacific Fair (Robina/Broadbeach)

Type: major shopping centre (Hooker Boulevard, Broadbeach). What it is: one of Australia's top-five shopping centres — 420-plus stores framed by tropical landscaping and gently-flowing water. Department stores (Myer, David Jones), luxury (Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Hermès, Prada, Versace, Christian Louboutin), high street (H&M, Zara, Kmart, Big W) — the full range, in one air-conditioned building. What it's for: the “one stop for everything” option — a full day, or a two-hour browse; the fountains are the reason to stay. Getting there: the free tourist shuttle (daily from Broadbeach) or the G:link (Broadbeach South, a 5-minute walk). Pacific Fair

Stocklands (Burleigh)

Type: department store (Burleigh Heads). What it is: the long-established local department store: clothing, homewares, a pharmacy and the “the local's Myer trip” — a smaller, local version of the big-mall fix, on the heritage main street. What it's for: the “a proper shop, without the drive” option — a 30–60 minute browse on James Street, and the store that's been the local's department store for decades. Stocklands

Cavill Mall (Surfers)

Type: pedestrian mall (Cavill Avenue, Surfers Paradise). What it is: a long, wide pedestrian thoroughfare that runs from Cavill Avenue to the Esplanade — the city-to-beach walk, with retail along it, integrated seating and tables, and events through the year. What it's for: the “the walk that's also a shop” option — a 15–20 minute walk from the city to the beach, with the retail on the way. It's free, it's flat, and the light at the end (the beach) is the reason to do it. Cavill Mall

Southport Central (Southport)

Type: mixed-use commercial precinct (Southport). What it is: a three-tower development on the corner of Scarborough and Lawson Streets (opposite Australia Fair) — a modern office, retail and professional-services precinct in the heart of Southport's CBD, with excellent connectivity to the waterfront and the G:link. What it's for: the “the Southport CBD” option — a walk through the city's commercial core, with the retail and the services on the way. Southport Central

Robina Town Centre (Value)

Type: value shopping centre (Robina). What it is: 400-plus retail and specialty stores across spacious, air-conditioned wings — the high street without the price tag: Country Road, Seed Heritage, DeCuba, Witchery, H&M and the rest. A 900-seat Food Atrium and lakeside restaurants on The Promenade. Free parking. What it's for: the “the value big-mall” option — a full browse, a long lunch in the atrium, and the parking that's free. (This is also where the “Varsity-area shopping” actually is — see below.) Robina Town Centre

Ferry Rd Market (Southport)

Type: gourmet food market (Brickworks Centre, 107 Ferry Road, Southport). What it is: a market you can shop in and eat in — European deli goods, artisan bread and pastries, freshly roasted coffee, specialist tea, boutique liquor, premium meat and seafood (oysters shucked on site, fresh sushi), open daily 8am–6pm. What it's for: the “the market as a shop” option — a proper grocery shop, a long lunch, and the market that's open every day of the week. Ferry Rd Market

Burleigh Farmers Market (Burleigh)

Type: farmers' market (Burleigh Heads State School). What it is: 120-plus stalls every Saturday, 7am–12noon — fresh farm produce, organic fruit and vegetables, gourmet and global foods, deli products, flowers, plants, art and craft, antiques. Free entry, free parking. What it's for: the “the local shop” option — a Saturday-morning browse, a proper produce shop, and the market that's the local's version of a big-mall trip. Burleigh Farmers Market

Kivari (Boutique, Burleigh)

Type: fashion boutique (25 James Street, Burleigh Heads). What it is: a national fashion brand's boutique on the heritage main street — resort wear, denim and knitwear, in a modern-architecture space (opened May 2023), a stone's throw from the beach, among the boutiques, cafés and galleries. Free styling appointments; open Monday–Saturday 9am–5pm, Sunday 10am–4pm. What it's for: the “the proper boutique” option — a styled shop, not a browse, on the local main street. Kivari

Where the Outlets Actually Are

To be straight about it: there's no dedicated “outlet mall” in Varsity Village — the Varsity-area shopping is Robina Town Centre (the value centre, above) and the surrounding retail. The closest proper outlet centre is Harbour Town Premium Outlets (Harbour Town Premium Outlets, Brisbane — about an hour's drive, 200-plus stores, the designer-discount option). If the trip is a “outlet day” thing, that's the one to drive to; if it's a “big-mall day” thing, Pacific Fair and Robina Town Centre cover the coast. Harbour Town

Shopping Notes

Practical: the Pacific Fair free shuttle shuttle is free (daily from Broadbeach); the G:link stops at Pacific Fair (Broadbeach South). The Burleigh market is Saturday 7am–12noon — go early. The Ferry Rd market is daily 8am–6pm — the mid-morning or the early-evening option. The Cavill Mall walk is 15–20 minutes — do it at sunset, when the light is low and the strip is quiet. And whatever you're buying — the free parking at Robina Town Centre and the free entry to the markets are the two that save the most on a full day.
